How these numbers and chances are made
New seats: Louisiana Department of Education private-school enrollment by grade (October counts, 2005-06 through 2025-26). New students at a grade = this fall's class minus last fall's class one grade lower, averaged over the last three falls; the lowest grade a school offers counts as all new. Because students also leave, this is a floor: real admissions can be somewhat higher.
Children nearby: 2020 Census counts of children of that age living within 3 miles of the school, and in your ZIP code (five-year age groups divided evenly by year).
Your priority: Catholic parish schools generally admit families of their own parish first, then other Catholic families, then others; registration and participation rules vary by school. "Your parish" uses the Archdiocese of New Orleans' official parish boundaries. Catholic high schools, independent Catholic schools and other private schools admit by application, often with testing.
Estimated chance is a rule of thumb, not a probability: it starts from how many new seats the school has at that grade, then moves up or down for competition (seats per 100 children that age within 3 miles), your priority, and whether the school is growing (more demand) or shrinking (more room). No public source reports applicants or waitlists, so treat it as a guide to where to look and what to ask, and confirm with each school.
Distances are estimates (straight line × 1.3 for streets; ~22 mph driving plus 3 minutes, 3 mph walking). Use the Directions links for real routes. Locations: federal Private School Survey and OpenStreetMap.
Public schools: Louisiana Department of Education October enrollment by site (2020, 2022–2025) and 2025 school letter grades; locations from the federal school directory. Jefferson Parish assigns neighborhood schools by address (check yours with the district's lookup); its schools for advanced studies require eligibility; charters admit by lottery. New Orleans places students through the citywide NCAP lottery, with entry requirements at a few schools and grades as listed by NOLA Public Schools. Public Pre-K usually has income or other eligibility rules.
Tuition is each private school's own published rate for one child for the school year shown (from its website, PDF or tuition sheet; the "source" link goes to it), with required fees and sibling discounts where posted. Many schools also offer financial aid that isn't shown. LA GATOR education savings accounts can pay private tuition for eligible families: 2025-26 awards were $5,243, or $7,626 at or below 250% of the federal poverty line, and up to $15,253 for students with disabilities; 2026-27 amounts depend on state funding (LA GATOR).
Time in the car assumes one round trip on each of 180 school days at the estimated drive time.
Schools that report a junior and senior high separately (for example Jesuit and Brother Martin) are combined.
